Standard 1: Scientific and Theoretical Knowledge
Physical education teacher candidate knows and apply discipline-specific scientific and theoretical concepts critical to the development of physically educated individuals.
Knowledge of how the body moves and the origin of different movements are key for a teacher to know. When helping students develop and build muscles for sport or just recreation teachers should know and understand different exercises/activities that target specific muscle groups and how to work them. Focusing on aspects such as power, strength, and endurance must be emphasized to best improve student performance. Some individuals will be less fit than others and it's important to recognize these students and provide encouragement and support for all. To prevent injury or health problems, easing these individuals into exercises and activites will benefit them best. Not all students develop at the same rate, and teachers must know their limitations in order to create lesson plans that are developmentally appropriate for everyone to participate. Being an athlete has allowed me to understand not only how important physical activity truely is for your body, but also how having knowledge of your health and different ways to improve it could help in preventing injuries and enhancing performance.
