Standard 5: Impact on Student Learning

Physical education teacher candidates utilize assessments and reflection to foster student learning and inform instructional divisions.

Being able to accurately assess students in your physical education class is important. Since there are a variety of ways for students to meet goals and objectives there has to be several ways to measure their progresss. Teachers must qualitatively asses their students understanding limitations and the different rates of development. I believe the best form of evaluation occurs during and after the skill has been performed. Providing constructive feedback during student assessment allows the instructor to see how well students respond to or if appropriate adjustments were made prior to completion. When doing assessments teachers should keep in mind that students are only going to do as well as you teach them, so making sure instruction is relevant, meaningful, and memorable is key for student success. To ensure students are comprehending concepts and actions teachers should reflect on lessons and activites prior to closure. Asking higher ordered questions requiring them to think critically will have a great impact on both student learning and your instruction.
